804noise Presents: Architeuthis Walks on Land (conisting of Amy Cimini (viola) + Katherine Young (bassoon and sometimes accordion), Contant Mauk, JonathanZorn (electronics) + Rachel Thompson(viola), & Lily (local puppeteer)
Architeuthis Walks on Land is Amy Cimini and Katherine Young's improvised project. Cimini (viola) and Young (bassoon and accordion) explore the full expressive parameters of the duo form, working with the material and textural ranges of their instruments. Architeuthis's music spans from a slowly unfolding intimacy to a jagged, kinetic style. Both soloistic and often drone-oriented, the duo draw on their interests in contemporary classical music (which is how they first performed together more than six years ago), free music, and rock. Cimini and Young played together in the piratical folk-pop band The William Young and are part of the trio Civil War (with Adam Sonderberg) and the new music collective Till by Turning. They've worked with Fred Lonberg-Holm, Jessica Pavone, Jason Ajemian, Aram Shelton, Carol Genetti, and Anthony Braxton, among others.
Track A | Track B
Jonathan Zorn (electronics) and Rachel Thompson (violin) have been working together on collaborative/interactive works for strings and electronics for over five years. Like musical variations on a three-legged race, no one player has control over their sound. Instead both performers must cooperate to create a group instrument. The current incarnation of their collaboration uses an interactive computer environment that moves between sharply divided electronic sounds and violin sounds to noisy hybrids where the violin becomes both sound source and controller.

804noise Presents: 'Super Basic'
'Super Basic' is a weekly series of improvised and avant garde music curated by Martin McCavitt of Birds in the Meadow.
The Concept
Improvising musicians will meet on Thursday nights and perform as solos, duets, trios & quartets. Marty will set the vibe with a loose set of rules (ie. players will perform at a moderate volume to soft (about the level of an acoustic ensemble. Players should perform with restraint or minimally, etc.). |

804noise Presents: 'Loops & Gestures' No. 1
Kenneth Yates (harm stryker/caustic castle/insects with tits) will be
curating a quarterly improvised avant-garde music event titled 'Loops &
Gestures'. Artist's will be invited to participate in a four piece
collaboration in which they will have one hour to rehearse privately. With
this time they will discuss how to utilize a loose improvising technique
called 'looping' (sustained sound with subtle changes) & 'gesturing'
(short quick bursts of sound with constant movement) into their
performance. The group will choose amongst themselves, a conductor, who
will determine the duration of each section within the performance. Each
player will be given cards with a matching number of sections, (ie. 4
sections, 10 section, 23 sections, etc.) Each section will consist of any
of the three commands (Loop / Gesture / ______ = Not Playing). Each
player will have their own card, and the players will not know what the
other players in the quartet will be doing until the next section is set
into motion.

804noise Presents: Max Noi Mach (8mm Records, Ozonokids Records - Philadelphia), Caleb Johnston (Heresee / Johnston Brothers), & Chefkirk (Richmond/804noise/TibProd/Brise-Cul/AudioBot)
Caleb Johnston is usually one blink of an eye away from dropping everything, roaming the earth, and staring at rocks all day. In the mean time he is designing, building, and torture tuning pipe organs for a living. Music ventures aims are to make your head pop off, give to others, feel anything, and crack open times mirage. These are not the only ideas ever conveyed, but some secrets must be left for people to discover. The band also wishes that there was a more direct connection between the brain patterns and the airways besides equipment. Until then I will continue to partake in projects like opening up vintage modular synthesizers, home built circuits, strings, and bastardized reversed vacuum cleaners for portable pipe organs. Floating around with other objects in the universe are 2 anonymous vinyl records and a handful of collaborations, easily found with a little effort. I love birds, hogs, and tongues. I hate clocks, cars, and telephones. Brother of Twig from Nautical Almanac

804noise & WRIR Richmond Independent Radio Presents: a public screening of WAL-MART: The high cost of Low Price
WAL-MART: THE HIGH COST OF LOW PRICE is a feature length documentary that uncovers a retail giant's assault on families and American values. The film dives into the deeply personal stories and everyday lives of families and communities struggling to fight a goliath. A working mother is forced to turn to public assistance to provide healthcare for her two small children. A Missouri family loses its business after Wal-Mart is given over $2 million to open its doors down the road. A mayor struggles to equip his first responders after Wal-Mart pulls out and relocates just outside the city limits. A community in California unites, takes on the giant, and wins! Producer/Director Robert Greenwald and Brave New Films take you on an extraordinary journey that will change the way you think, feel -- and shop.
Why is 804noise presenting this? Why not? We're working people too, and
as if suburban WAL-MART hasn't already had an effect on the downtown mom &
pop retail and culture, there is talk about other retail giants conquering
the city of Richmond too, as close as the Boulevard [Councilman: Big Retailers Looking at The Diamond].
There are those of us who have the privledge to speak out and act on behalf of others, others who in tight situations with family and medical issues to consider, are forced to repress their anger towards their oppressors. That privledge must be realized within ourselves and encouraged amongst our peers. Let things begin to amass with this event and allow ideas to turn into action and provide the struggle with a sturdy platform to conduct change in favor of everyone. |

804noise Presents: FM/Intrusion
FM/Intusion is an event where performers broadcast live audio via an
inexpensive fm transmitter designed for use with mp3 players in cars. To
hear the performance you must come with your own headphones and FM walkmen
receiver. Indoors this transmitter can potentially reach a 50 foot radius
making it ideal for renegade events inside libraries, churches, or in this
case a somewhat upscale Regency Mall. 804noise utilized this tactic in
2001 at the VCU Library in front of the Starbucks Cafe due to the fact
that we weren't able, for a long period of time, to find a "proper" venue
to have experimental events. This made it possible to have them anywhere
anytime without anyone (unless we wanted them to) knowing anything about
it.
FM/Intrusion once again went off without a hitch with some
amazing performances by Alfred Shaprio, Some Awesome Radical Sound aka
SARS, & Kelly Harm Stryker. We positioned ourselves near the Santa Claus
area of Regency Mall with headphones and fm receivers in hand. We were
definitely out of place as group of friends seemingly ignoring eachother
and listening to the "radio".
The first performance of the evening was a great mellow dose of
atmospherics and abstract noise and feedback, using only his laptop.
Next up was Kelly Nourse aka Harm Stryker, using a small toy record player
which ran on batteries, an sp-202 Dr. Sample and a Micro Cassette
Recorder. With these simple tools she re-invinted and revolutionized the
rediculous art of chopped and screwed hip-hop.
And last but certainly not least, Alfred Shaprio put on the most energetic
performance and maybe the most involved. Playing an air organ version of
rudolph the red nose reindeer through a broken cassette player which not
only distorts everything beautifully, but when Shapiro shakes the tape
player violently it warps the sound.
Thanks to everyone who showed up to the FM/Intrusion, we'll post some
pictures from it later today. If anyone else has ideas for an
fm/intrusion, lets make it happen.

804noise Presents: Third Annual 804noise South Eastern Experimental & Noise Festival Workshop Series
Community vs. Scene: Harm Stryker will talk about the idea
behind the (areacode)noise concept, the potential of building a working
network of experimental communities tied together by a common
philosophy based on open community participation, and encourage
everyone to organized their own 804noise events.
[3:00pm]
Open Source Software and Noise: In this workshop, Pataphonic
will demonstrate open source software resources available for making
noise. Special emphasis will be placed on Pure Data, Jack, and setting
up a low latency kernel Linux noise workstation on a PC.
[4:00pm]
Circuit Bending: The workshop on circuit-bending will
explore the deliberate short-circuiting and re-wiring of a noise-making
device to create a unique instrument. No experience with electronics is
necessary to enjoy this creative DIY project; attendees will not only
learn about and observe the process but be able to play with some
circuit-bent devices.

804noise Presents: Pre-Festival Cookout
Following the workshops, 804noise will setup the rest of the
weekend with a free experimental/noise event with an emphasis on fun in
the back yard of Chop Suey Books! And if everything goes right, there
will be food with the music. The following musical acts will be
performing under the (hopefully) clear night sky:
Silver Ninjas
- Silver Ninjas began in the late 90s as the alter-ego of a band called
IDI AMIN. Silver Ninjas is now a revolving group of assassins intent on
aural domination.
Drums Like Machine Guns
- Masters of the seven-minute sonic set, reign supreme as visionaries
of all things aural. They will urge you to "Get Radical", and Get
Radical you will!
SARS
- SARS (Some Awesome Radical Sound) produces experimental breaks of the
abstract variety using laptop and various other processing techniques.
Radioshock
- Radio Shock is a one-man band that plays sometimes danceable, often
dissonant, noise-party music. Radio Shock's infectious beats will make
you want to get up and dance while trying to trip you up at the same
time. Created by M*P*Lockwood specifically to tour and entertain live
audiences, Radio Shock is designed for maximum mobility. The music is
made using only an 80's-era Yamaha keyboard, a uniquely tuned guitar,
and a few Toys'R'Us noise-makers (sometimes played all at the same
time), all of which can be carried on M*P*'s person. Because of this,
he has been able to tour across the country by Greyhound bus. In fact,
Radio Shock is considered to be on "permanent tour" and any lack of
shows in the immediate future should be considered a brief break.

Formed in early 2003, the group consists of flautist Gregory McMahon, sitar player Ami K. Dang, video artist John Hensel and Travis Johns, who plays bass and electronics. To date, their work has been featured in such places as the 2003 Placard Experimental Music Festival, The Spaceworks Gallery (NYC) and the Allen Memorial Art Museum. |

804noise Presents: Yip-Yip (Florida), Climax Denial (Milwaukee), & Pitstain (Milwaukee)
Yip-Yip is a duo from Orlando, playing whacked-out, low-fidelity, idiot savant electronica on clunky Casio keyboards and pawn shop samplers. They were both dressed identically, with bodies and faces obscured by white gauze hoods and masks that made them resemble Jawas crossed with white lab rats. The spokesman for the group talked through a voice box that made him sound like an alien chipmunk cartoon. They were bathed in weird neon light. Halfway through their set of increasingly more Nintendo-esque trash-techno, Yip-Yip began to distribute stapled brown paper grab bags to everyone in the audience. Every bag contained different contents, most of them mysterious, funny or just plain odd. Mine contained random photographs of anonymous families, puzzle pieces, thumb tacks, crappy dollar-store candy, some court documents, an undeveloped Kodak picture disc, a pinup of P. Diddy, some "For External Use Only" stickers and a cassette single of Gerrardo's "Rico Suave." My friend's bag contained an Urkel trading card and a Barry White tape. - Jonathan Dean [brainwashed.com] |

FLICKER is a bi-monthly screening of short films by Richmond area filmmakers. Submissions must originate on film (Regular 8, Super 8 or 16mm) and be under 15 minutes in length. Films transferred to video are accepted. Harm Stryker will be performing live with The Exquisite Corpse film, previously shown at the Surrealist Film Festival back in December 2004. Exquisite Corpse is the result of a couple Super 8mm cameras passed around between a group of people. Each person shot 30 seconds of film and then passed it on not knowing how it will turn out when finally projected.

804noise Presents: An evening of experimental music at Harrison St. Coffee every Thursday. Bring your own records and CD's (a small PA, CD players, and turntables will be provided). Get there early and signup to play your collection of experimental, noise, or avant garde sounds. [Playlist Archive]
The purpose of this event is to allow people the opportunity to absorb at their own pace, the sounds of experimental music, which can sometimes seem intimidating if you don't know anything about it, but it doesn't have to be that way. Throw intellectual elitism out the window and enjoy. | Harrison St. Coffee

"Futuropolis" - an experimental film
featured as part of the James River Film Festival
This film features the first composition Marty
McCavitt (a.k.a. Birds in the Meadow) had ever
written. Released in 1984, it was filmed in the
basement of the Virginia Science Museum over nine
years and stands as one of the longest indepedently
produced animated films ever made at 45 minutes.
"Futuropolis" is a kind of homage to
the sci-fi film gone awry, done in a sure-handed,
tounge-in-cheek style... projected in 16mm.
