The 804noise Fest is an all day experimental, noise &
multi-media festival held each year in Richmond, Virginia showcasing
experimental & noise artists mainly from Virginia along side a
handful of special out of town guests. All artists perform for the sake
of exposure and community growth and proceeds go back into the 804noise
community to help fund future events and the 804noise community record
label.
The 3rd Annual 804noise South Eastern Experimental & Noise Festival
will be held on Sunday October 16th at the Art Works Gallery. This
years festival features over 19 experimental and noise artists and
collaborations, visual artwork from local artists; information tables
from local radical and independent organizations, and a label expo
featuring independent experimental and noise labels from across the
country. On Saturday October 15th, Chop Suey Books will host a series
of 804noise workshops on the subjects of circuit bending, community
organizing, an open source resource optimized for producing noise, and
more.

804noise Fest (Workshop Series):
Community vs. Scene: Harm Stryker will talk about the idea
behind the (areacode)noise concept, the potential of building a working
network of experimental communities tied together by a common
philosophy based on open community participation, and encourage
everyone to organized their own 804noise events.
[3:00pm]
Open Source Software and Noise: In this workshop, Pataphonic
will demonstrate open source software resources available for making
noise. Special emphasis will be placed on Pure Data, Jack, and setting
up a low latency kernel Linux noise workstation on a PC.
[4:00pm]
Circuit Bending: The workshop on circuit-bending will
explore the deliberate short-circuiting and re-wiring of a noise-making
device to create a unique instrument. No experience with electronics is
necessary to enjoy this creative DIY project; attendees will not only
learn about and observe the process but be able to play with some
circuit-bent devices.
[5:00pm]
804noise Fest 2005 (Outdoor Festivities):
Following the workshops, 804noise will setup the rest of the
weekend with a free experimental/noise event with an emphasis on fun in
the back yard of Chop Suey Books! And if everything goes right, there
will be food with the music. The following musical acts will be
performing under the (hopefully) clear night sky:
Silver Ninjas
- Silver Ninjas began in the late 90s as the alter-ego of a band called
IDI AMIN. Silver Ninjas is now a revolving group of assassins intent on
aural domination.
Drums Like Machine Guns
- Masters of the seven-minute sonic set, reign supreme as visionaries
of all things aural. They will urge you to "Get Radical", and Get
Radical you will!
SARS
- SARS (Some Awesome Radical Sound) produces experimental breaks of the
abstract variety using laptop and various other processing techniques.
Radioshock
- Radio Shock is a one-man band that plays sometimes danceable, often
dissonant, noise-party music. Radio Shock's infectious beats will make
you want to get up and dance while trying to trip you up at the same
time. Created by M*P*Lockwood specifically to tour and entertain live
audiences, Radio Shock is designed for maximum mobility. The music is
made using only an 80's-era Yamaha keyboard, a uniquely tuned guitar,
and a few Toys'R'Us noise-makers (sometimes played all at the same
time), all of which can be carried on M*P*'s person. Because of this,
he has been able to tour across the country by Greyhound bus. In fact,
Radio Shock is considered to be on "permanent tour" and any lack of
shows in the immediate future should be considered a brief break.

804noise Fest 2005 (Main Event):
For the third year now, 804noise will be bringing you a complete
day of noise and experimental music. Over twenty artists in eleven
hours, record labels from across the country, information and
non-profit groups, visual art and more. Below you will find a complete
list of participants in the order they will be performing:
[NO PICTURE]
Mark Richardson
- Mark Richardson collects and writes about experimental music. His DJ
sets, which incorporate drones, noise, and miscellaneous arcane audio,
are inspired in part by the idea of lost radio transmissions that have
returned to earth from space.

Kohoutek & Trust Riots
- Kohoutek are improvised psych with noise tendencies and abstraction.
Sonic explorations in any combination of drums, percussion, guitar,
bass, laptop, homemade electronics, field recordings, contact mics,
chord organ, and household appliances. Have been described as "if Can
were a 4AD band" and been compared to Jessamine, Acid Mothers Temple,
and Skullflower. The Trust Riots consist of Mike Karadimos and Chris
Jeely (aka Accelera Deck - also operator of the Scarcelight
record label). Their sound revolves around the use of live processed
guitars, laptop and multiple tape players creating an atmosphere that
is equal parts drone, noise and found sound.
The Mental Hygiene League & Jabber Wocky
- The Mental Hygiene League is a loose consortium of friends that grew
out of basement jam sessions in Danville, Virginia at a time when only
parents used the word Noise. The current line up is anchored by Alan
Walker and Brent Raper, yet their ranks have been known to swell to
include fellow MHL’ers from Richmond, Charlotte Courthouse and the
Shenandoah Valley. They were featured at the 2004 Shenandoah
Space-Music Symposium and performed at the 2-day 434Noise Festival in
July, 2005. Their music incorporates acoustic & electronic
instruments and aspires to emulate the idiot savant and art created by
apes. Jabber Wocky's style/sound falls in the audio
collage/plunderphonics category, an artform mastered by the group
Negativland in the 80's and early 90's where the artist takes
recognizable mainstream music, talk radio, commercials, etc, samples
it, manipulates and distorts it, strips away the ryhthm, then
re-sequencing it to make something completely new and sometimes making
a statement that wasn't intended by the original material.
Vilam Priest & Controlled Dissonance - Description pending.
Khate + FERALCATSCAN
- Two of 757Noise's mad scientists join forces, manipulating an
orchestra of circuit-bent, homemade, and junk instruments. The result
is a hypnotic collage of dark textures, static-laden beats, and bursts
of free noise, punctuated with unusual samples from the Vinyl
Translator (a circuit-bent turntable).
Red Canasta
- Circumstantial relocation reunites two old cohorts for another dance
with sonic exploration. Aural whirling dervishes ensue. Measurements:
3' x 3' x 7'.
A.M. Salad
- A.M. Salad is a one man boxing match; construction hand tools and
game hunting supplies in one corner... and in the other corner: broken
strings, dental equipment, and chaotic fumblers. Prepare to punch
yourself in the face.
Pataphonic - Noise performed on a risky combination of computers and electro-acoustic instruments.
Birds in the Meadow - Birds in the Meadow is Marty McCavitt
(improvised electronics), who creates layers of tight and calculated
bursts of frantic glitching squeals and squalls that move from one end
of the tonal spectrum to the next in a heartbeat.
Black Meat - Black Meat is Travis Morgan of NCC-Records and Graham Moore of Blossoming Noise Records. Two noise label heads collide in a raucious blend of harsh noise, drone, plunderphonics and music-concrete.
The Caution Curves
- The Caution Curves are a Washington DC-based trio combining vocal
gymnastics with improvised drums and guitars rounded out by textured
layers of laptop drone.
ENE & Monolit Zero
- ENE has been making experimental electronic music for over a decade.
The ENE discography features three full length CDs plus a mind boggling
array of compilations and remixes, while ENE's live history is even
more varied than its recorded. Monolith Zero is Adam Hudson, his solo
live performances consist of gaping atmospheres of almost silent drone
cut with short burst of harsh noise, usually lasting between 5 and 15
minutes total.
[NO PICTURE]
Lust Ionics - Improv-no-wave-garage-death-grind by three sick Downtown NYC freak-jazzers
Brian Jones Percussion Ensemble - Improvised music featuring small percussion instruments (line-up TBA).
Nautical Almanac - Smooth Jazz.
[NO PICTURE]
Never Presence Forever
- Never Presence Forever's sound revolves largely around a blend of
dark ambient/death industrial soundscapes often steeped in cryptic
personal exploration or apocalyptic undercurrents.
Xiphoid Dementia & Burn Ward - Dark ambient noise from Xiphoid Dementia merges with the harsh, cut-up gutter electronics of Burn Ward.
Harm Stryker & Narcotic Dreams
- Harm Stryker is Kelly Nourse & Kenny Yates, a politically and
socially motivated experimental project which employs carefully crafted
samples, minimal sequencing, feedback & theremins, processed with
filters, stomp boxes, and other effects to create a rich atmosphere of
abstract rhythm & noise. Narcotic Dreams is James McCrea, who uses
electric guitars, vocals and effect pedals to create shifting
atmospherics, slicing into vague reverberations with ominous drones and
wailing razorblade feedback.
Projexorcism
- Projexorcism is made up of a quad 16mm projector array that is
suspended from a lighting pole - the projectors are synchronized with a
4-channel sound-actuated variable speed lighting controller. The
projected images are split, inverted and bent using silver reflective
CD-Rs and a plastic fresnel lens. The optical audio is fed through
various effects and samplers before being replayed - the mechanical
sounds of the relays and the bulbs brightening and dimming add further
organic sounds to the collage of sound.
(Label Expo):
In an adjacent room during the main event the 804noise Fest will be
hosting a label expo featuring independent record labels,
not-for-profit groups, and collectives from across the the U.S. Some of
those groups are as following
Blossoming Noise - Featuring releases by Merzbow, K.K. Null, Aube and more.
