Thanks to those of you who came out to the WALMART: High Cost of Low Price screening. Thanks a bunch for all the Air Time on WRIR and to the Richmond Defender for the mention in their paper, WCVE for listing it on Artsline, & The Flying Brick Community Library in Oregon Hill for helping with the extra chairs. It was a packed house but everything went really smoothe and everyone one was really cool about the lack of proper seating. We seriously didn't expect such a large crowd. We were suppose to do a second screening on Thursday January 19th at 8pm at the suggestion of the gallery owner, the announcement was made to the crowd at the beginning and end of the event, but the owner of the gallery pulled the plug on that idea after the fact, after everyone had left, so we didn't get to alert anyone. I'll spare you the details, but lets just say 804noise will not be hosting anymore events at the ADA Gallery. We're really sorry if you were planning to attend the event Thursday, we are looking into finding an alternative venue on short notice. If you'd like to host a screening someplace we'd be more than happy to loan you the film. However we do plan on hosting more events like these in the future when the opportunity presents itself.

12.29.05
Be sure to pay attention to the "past events" section of the 804noise site. We are going to try and update and archive some of the live events with free mp3 downloads.

11.17.05
Download full length high quality mp3 recordings of discontinued or out of print 804noise record releases. You may have missed out on the beautiful hand made artwork, but there is no reason to miss out on the music too. 804noise will add the mp3's free to the public from the label section of the website. Once the last copy of any limited release leaves the catalog, and depending on the permissions of the artists, it will be available here. So far the 804noise Processing Quartet CDR & Harm Stryker "A Most Beautiful Place" CDR are availalbe for download.

10.26.05
804noise joins the bulletin board trend with our own "804noise Community Bulletin Board". We've been meaning to add one of these for awhile because they seem to encourage more discussion over the e-mail based forums we've all been accustomed to for so long. So instead of filling up your inbox with e-mails you will probably never read, you can check them out when you feel like it at http://804noise.org/community/.

10.25.05
New releases and descripstion along with brief mp3 samples have been added to the 804noise Record's catalog. We've also added some limited edition screen printed t-shirts from Narcotic Dreams and Never Presence Forever. Check them out here.

Noise Solution Radio will be moving from Sunday nights on WRIR 97.3FM to Wednesday nights from 11pm - 1am. This move is an attempt by WRIR to couple radio programs with other shows during the week that may share listeners and optimize our fan base. We're hoping that free103point9.org will allow us to continue simultaneously webcasting the radio show through their website. This change will begin Wednesday July 27, 2005.

07.05.05
Kenneth Yates of Harm Stryker is going to be be performing tonight with Ben Scott and Tommy Birchett of Broadcastatic on their weekly WRIR 97.3FM radio show of the same title, if you miss you can download the archived mp3 here.

Free103point9.org a transmission arts non-profit organization based out of Brooklyn and a complex called the Wave Farm in upstate New York has taken the 804noise' "Noise Solution" radio show to another level by inviting us to broadcast via the internet simultaneously through their stream. They offer a high quality stereo stream and an audience that spans the globe. The invitation was extended due to our interest in tramission arts and activism with the FM/Intrusion events.

Weekly "social" - R.I.P. This week at the 804noise meeting discussion centered around the status of the weekly social and a decision was made to not go forward with it. The decision was based on many things, mostly those involved in the discussion feel that the social could be more fun if handled in a different way. We are looking into other options for this event, and will be having it in the future less frequently. (probably once a month) We will keep you updated on the happenings.

Fair Trade w/ 804noise We've got a lot of merchandise accumulating in the closet and it needs to be dispersed. So we're opening our catalog for trade to other record labels and independent distribution. Since we can't afford proper advertising, and most distributors won't touch our "product" until we have 10 to 15 records under our collective belts we need to find someway that will insure that these releases are reaching those who would appreciate what we are doing here in Richmond, Virginia. Trading also means that we will be able to offer our locale a chance to snatch up some great independently produced noise and experimental recordings from artists they may have never had the chance to hear. If you run a distro or record label and would like to trade please get in touch. Email info804@804noise.org

Style Weekly published an article written by freelance writer Nathan Lott (nice guy btw, nice article) for their 2005 music issue. Let it be known that as far as the picture in the paper and the caption beneath it is concerned... they called us and asked for all the names of the people pictured... Those names were provided. Yet, against our wishes, and it was discussed with them, they still made a point to put names to the faces of those interviewed for this article and for some reason failed to mention all the others in the picture. Trust us, it's a big deal. 804noise would not be anything if it weren't for all those dedicated to making this community as strong as it is. Whether it's attending or organizing events, making music/art/noise, spreading the word via fliers, pamphlets, emails, etc. or strictly being an enthusiast who wants to see this continue thriving in our city and others. We wanted that to be reflected in this article as much as possible. We asked them not to allow any one person or those interviewed for the article to be singled out in a picture as being representative of the 804noise collective, but for whatever reason Style Weekly thinks that putting faces to articles helps sell news papers or advertisements, or maybe they just do whatever they want and think they can get away with it. There is more to this story... just ask.

They may be ex-Richmond residents, but To Kill a Petty Bourgoeisie will forever be a member of the 804noise community. TKAPB have a new album coming out soon, independently produced and released on their R. Bushman Recordings & Archives. Hear a little taste on their myspace page with a track titled "Lenard Grey".

We have a new 804noise Limited release from Harm Stryker's Kelly Nourse. Her first recorded solo excursion captured from her live performance at January 2005's FM/Intrusion entitled "A Most Beautiful Place". Performing through a small inexpensive fm transmitter the audience experienced through headphones an excellent example of how beautfiul minimalism can be. Hand printed blue & white linoleum cut design on brown cardstock. The CD is $5ppd in the US. [MP3 Excerpt].

The MacRock Festival was a success, and the mountains alone made the trip well worth the inhumane gas expenses and late night drive back. We sold a good amount of items, passed out all our 804noise buttons, and ran into so many people who have heard about 804noise from all over the east coast. It really is amazing to find out that our efforts aren't in vain when it comes to reaching folks outside of our locale.

We saw Tulsa Drone outside of their local habitat for the first time which made for much more plesurable experience than seeing them here in Richmond. More peole were sitting, listening, and day dreaming than looking pretty and being scene. Why do I focus on that so much? It's just so damn distracting, I really hate seeing people milling about at a show where listening and experiencing the "art" should be the number one priority. We also saw Wolf Eyes do a pretty un-inspiring set of their usual, we know they're capable of better. They could have been much louder. We stayed after Wolf Eyes to see Hoover do their re-union thing and left after two or three songs because it was really really bad and I didn't recognize anything. We stayed for one more band, umm Pig Destroyer. Yeah. Grind-core... silly silly stuff.

The "processing quartet" CDR is finally available through 804noise Limited Records. It took awhile due to screen printing problems. It is limited to 50 copies, so grab it while you can. The recording was captured live back in the October of 2004 onto two minidisc at Richmond's Art Works Gallery. The result is a complex, beautiful and lush representation of what these four artists are capable of when performing with eachother. You can purchase it at any 804noise event or on-line for $5 postage paid.

Style Weekly reviewed the Slang Santuary CD release "Honey Comb", by Brian Jones & Marty McCavitt (Birds in the Meadows). Below is an excerpt, but read the whole review here.

"...McCavitt plays “prepared piano,” meaning that various bits of buzzing, damping and otherwise sound-altering bits have been added to the instrument’s innards..."

In case you haven't read the 804noise Meeting minutes the 804noise weekly "social" has been put on the back burner for the time being...

"...We decided, atleast for the time being, to put the "social" on hold due to the feeling that it has run its course. Attendance has been thin and the energy that once was there, has dissapeared. There hasn't been much interest from new people within the past couple months, and we felt like the time and energy that went into this event, could be spent better elsewhere within 804noise. It should be noted that this isn't the end of the "social" but a chance to gain a renewed interest and direction for 804noise."

WRIR 97.3FM Richmond Indie Radio, after years of struggle is finally on the radio dial and it began today! Richmond will never be the same. WRIR is NOT a college radio station, its a true independent community operated radio station for the community! And 804noise is proud to be a part of this historical moment in Richmond's history with our own Sunday evening show "Noise Solution". WRIR as a low power FM radio station will serve the largest population in America due to its prime location across from the Lowes parking lot on Broad Street. WRIR will be reaching the four corners of the city and stretching it's signal out to most of the surrounding counties! This will be a great opportunity to reach the youth of Richmond who will someday be taking a lot of our places as creative and progressive community organizers. [WRIR Schedule]

11.22.04
Kenny Yate (Harm Stryker) attended City Council tonight with Tommy Birchett (Broadcastatic), Will (MIR), & Mark L. (804noise) along side many others in support of WRIR's request for a special use permit that would allow them to operate at their West Broad Street location as an independent radio station and allow them to erect an antenna atop the building.

A few attenedee's spoke before hand in support of the Radio Station stating that this is a much needed resource for this city and that it will be "interesting". Mayor McCollum & Bill Pantele commented on the stations request and showed their support, even pointing out that it will be a refreshing change of pace in the light of Clear Channels presence on the airwaves.

With that said, the city council passed the special use permit without any opposition. WRIR is now less than three weeks away from being FM! All that's holding them back now is basically securing the hardware to the building.

11.10.04
We have compiled a list of places that 804noise fliers should be distributed. If you would like to volunteer, check out the list and tell us what area/location you want to be responsible for. This can work! [flier resource]

Black Wednesday
"You may be 38 years old, as I happen to be. And one day, some great opportunity stands before you and calls you to stand up for some great principle, some great issue, some great cause. And you refuse to do it because you are afraid...You refuse to do it because you want to live longer...You're afraid that you will lose your job, or you are afraid that you will be criticized or that you will lose your popularity, or you're afraid that somebody will stab you, or shoot at you or bomb your house; so you refuse to take the stand.

Well you may go on and live until you are 90, but you're just as dead at 38 as you would be at 90. And the cessation of breathing in your life is but the belated announcement of an earlier death of the spirit." - Martin Luther King Jr.

The Bizarre Market was a success. In addition to selling plenty of merchandise, we spoke with several passer-by's, learning that 804noise has definitely infiltrated the consciousness of our fellow Richmonders. If they didn't already know what 804noise was about they've atleast seen or heard the name before. We also passed out pamphlets and informed people that the 804noise "social" has moved to a much more convenient location at Harrison St. Coffee House.

The next Bizarre Market will be in about three months, if you're interested in helping to make items for fundraising get in touch, we have plans to create circuit bent toys, contact mics, and more.

Vicky Long, a writer for University of Virginia's "The Declaration On-Line" wrote an article/review about the 2004 804noise Festival entitled "Making a Din with Birds of Tin (and others)". [read article]

"...In the end, noise is just another way to think about music. When Birds of Tin closed their set with a quote from the painter Jackson Pollock in which he says that each generation must find its own technique for expressing its reality, the performers are making a point: when one considers the world around us, making noise makes sense. As Moresberger said, "Everybody can't always listen to whatever is on the radio. It is just an alternative." [read more]

The 804noise Fest ended yesterday without a hitch. We documented the event with video, film & sound which we will soon make avaialble in one form or another. We would like to thank all the bands for performing and the reinforced community vibe that came with being ahead of schedule for most of the day. Who knew that could happen in Richmond? We would also like to thank all the groups and organizations for spending the day with us, and all the volunteers who helped make the event run as smoothly as it did. None of this would have been possible without your help.

The 804noise Community Meeting commenced today with a new goal of posting meeting minutes to the 804noise website. Check them out here. [Meeting Minutes].

09.18.04
Igloo Magazine has been giving 804noise a lot of press lately, with a feature on their site about the 804noise Festival and now with a great review of the compilation cd.

"...804Noise is a snapshot of the local Virginia noise scene, an introduction to the sonic mayhem makers of the (804) area code. It's a road map, a Chamber of Commerce sponsored tourist pamphlet, showing you the hot spots of the area. And, like all broadly minded compilations, it has a little something for everyone..." Melissa Sunderland, a writer for local zine Brainwave Frequency, conducted an interview with Harm Stryker's Kenneth Yates about 804noise and experimental music in Richmond. Check out the interview on-line here! [interview]

804noise Records will be producing the first in which will be a series of split CD releases beginning November 2004. To begin the series, Monolith Zero & Never Presence Forever will be presenting 5 tracks and/or a maximum of 30 minutes of original material each. Never Presence Forever and Monolith Zero have also contributed tracks to the "804noise" Compilation.

For those of you who don't already know... 804noise is hosting an evening of experimental music at TT Lounge every Thursday at 7:00pm. You are encouraged to bring your own records and CD's (a small PA, CD players, and turntables will be provided). Get there early and signup to play your collection of experimental, noise, or avant garde sounds - last week's time slots were all spoken for prior to 7:00pm!

The purpose of this event is to allow people the opportunity to absorb, at their own pace, the sounds of experimental music. Noise andexperimental music can sometimes seem intimidating if you don't know anything about it, but it doesn't have to be that way. Throw intellectual elitism out the window and enjoy.

Check out the new Fall of Because online magazine, based in Richmond and covering all sorts of experimental music with reviews, interviews, etc. The first issue has just been launched and things will hopefully continue to grow from there.

The 2nd Annual 804noise Festival is slated for Sunday October 3rd at the Art Works Gallery. This years festival will feature over 15 experimental and noise projects, visual artwork from local artists, workshops on circuit bending, community organizing, etc; information tables from local radical and independent organizations such as Richmond Indie Radio, Food Not Bombs, Richmond Living Wage, Vegan Action, Richmond Queer Space Project, and more. Also this years festival will benefit the Richmond Independent Media Center a radical news resource for the Richmond community.

804noise needs volunteers to help paint rooms at the Art Works Gallery in return for letting us do events there. If you can help just ONCE, that would help a lot! It only takes about 2 hours of your evening. Contact us at info@804noise.org

804noise now has state side distribution through the Atlanta based Stickfigure Distro. However, Record stores will only order 804noise titles if they believe there is a demand for them. With your help, by asking your local record store to carry 804noise releases, the demand will be established.

05.28.04
Left Off the Dial published a review of the "804noise" compilation stating that "...the 804Noise compilation is an exhibition of stylistically diverse artists linked by their deft talent and a penchant for a range of digital tones that can either ease minds or peel paint..." and continues to state "...high expectations due to the quality found on the Harm Stryker release were completely met by this collection, and I was pleased by the knowledge that such a forward-thinking musical exploration is being conducted a mere hour and a half down I-95..." The 804noise Tour with To Kill a Petty Bourgeoisie & Harm Stryker was successful. We made several stops along the way to local record stores who bought several copies of the Split 7" and Compilation, and so goes the story of truly independent distribution. The most amazing show of the tour was in Detroit put together by a collective called The Upside Down Culture. They designed an event titled "Your life as a question of broken promises (in five acts)" around the idea that politics in experimental music aren't usually apparent upon first glance, but put in the right atmosphere or context they can portray a powerful message together. Through out the room radical literature was distributed on tables and walls, an Abstract film was shown, and Eric Ruin performed a shadow puppet show using stencils behind a silk screen, Aversion performed a breakcore set behind a strobe light that made the room of about 75 people extremely uncomfortable. It was great!

Coming up Sunday May 30th, 804noise will be holding the first of what will be a monthly public meeting at the Queer Pradise from 4:00pm - 6:00pm. We'll be discussing some of the projects that are in the works for the next 6 months and giving people a chance to come meet and talk with each other about how we can make the Richmond experimental community stronger.

04.14.04
